The Alta Alpina Bicycle Club is looking for help

On Saturday, May 24th the Alta Alpina Club will be holding the Pine Nut Cracker Mountain Bike Race. They are looking for volunteers on dirt bikes (they have a lesser need for quads as most of the race will be held on tight single track) to:

  • help mark the course the DAY before the race, Friday, May 23rd;
  • work as course marshals the DAY of the race;
  • hand out water to the competitors on the day of the race; and
  • ride sweep after the race is done.
If you have never worked a race, it is something you should do. It is fun to be on the inside of a race watching the competitors. If you have ever raced yourself, then you owe some karma payback for the good folks that made your races possible. So contact Robert Braun, robertingville@yahoo.com, 775-720-5983 and volunteer to help.

Check out the Upcoming Rides page

The Nevada Wilderness Project meets Lyon County

Back in February, in response to the Nevada Wilderness Project's Wilderness Proposal the good people of southern Lyon County came together to form the Coalition for Public Access. In a little over eight weeks they have become a force to be reckoned with. Thanks to their advocacy Mineral, Esmeralda and Lyon Counties have unanimously passed motions against this wilderness proposal. We are sharing our non-profit tax ID# with the CPA to help them get off the ground.

Update, 3 May 2008:
Last Saturday there was a special meeting of the Esmeralda County Commission. Senator Reid had requested this meeting to discuss the Nevada Wilderness Project's citizen proposal for designating additional wilderness areas in Esmeralda County. The meeting was attending by folks from Esmeralda County, Tonopah, a group of Desert Racers who took the time to drive up from southern California, as well as a group from the Coalition for Public Access. Only a few people from the NWP were present and they faced a hostile crowd. Word has it that Senator Reid did not show, but sent representatives from his office. At the Esmeralda County Commission May 6th meeting they will discuss: Sending letters to Senator Reid concerning meetings here on Public Lands Legislation held 4/26 and 4/27/08. Including concerns about the Furnace Creek Environmental Assessment and delay in reopening access pursuant to option 4 recommended by the lead agency, the Inyo National forest Staff. It looks as if Esmeralda County is keeping up the good fight.

At the May 1st meeting of the Douglas County Commission one of the Commissioners, Doug Johnson, made a presentation concerning the NWP's citizen wilderness proposal. Sections of proposed Lyon Peak, O'Banion Canyon and East Sister wilderness areas spill over into Douglas County. Commissioner Johnson was exploring the possibility of the Douglas County Commisioners sending a letter to the Nevada Congressional Delegation opposing the wilderness.
